Formation of North Eastern States of India


After partition of Assam in 1947, Assam became a state of India. Later on 1st December 1963 the Naga Hills district of Assam became the state of Nagaland. Again on 21th January 1972 through the North East Reorganization Act 1972, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura became full fledged States. Mizoram and Arunachl Pradesh became full-fledged states of India in 20th February 1987. These seven states of India: Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam are known as The Seven Sisters Of North-East. Sikkim was integrated as the eighth North Eastern Council state in 2002.





Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh has a land area 83.743 sq. km. with its capital at Itanagar. The word Arunachal Pradesh means Land of the rising sun.
Official Languages of Arunachal Pradesh are: Hindi, English 
Literacy rate: 65.38 %


Assam:

Assam has a land area of 78,550 sq. km. with its capital at Dispur. The word Assam is derived from the Ahom people who ruled Assam for 600 year.
Official Languages of Assam are: Assamese, Bengali (in the Barak Valley), Bodo (in Bodoland).
Literacy rate: 72.19%

Manipur

Manipur is a northeastern states of India with a land area of 22, 347 sq. km. and its capital at Imphal. The word Manipur means Land abundant with jewels.
Official Languages of Manipur is: Meiteilon(Manipuri)
Literacy rate: 79.21%


Meghalaya

Meghalaya has a land area of 22, 720 sq. km. with its capital at Shillong. The word Meghalaya means Abode of the clouds.
Official Languages of Meghalaya are: Khasi, Garo, English
Literacy rate: 74.43 %


Mizoram

Mizoram has a land area of 21, 081 sq. km. with its capital at Aizawl. The word Mizoram means Land of the Mizo people.
Official Languages of Mizoram are: Mizo, English
Literacy rate: 91.33 %


Nagaland

Nagaland has a land area of 16, 579 sq. km. with its capital at Kohima. The word Nagaland means Land of the Naga people
Official Language of Nagaland is: English
Literacy rate: 79.55 %


Sikkim

Sikkim has a land area of 7,096 sq. km. with its capital at Gangtok. The word Sikkim means New House.
Official Languages of Sikkim are: Nepali, English
Literacy rate: 81.42 %


Tripura

Tripura, a northeast state of India, has a land area of 10, 492 sq. km.  with its capital at Agartala. The word Tripura means Land near the Water.
Official Languages of Tripura are: Bengali, Kokborok, English
Literacy rate: 87.22%
